How does sugar affect brain? Can it cause memory problems and depression?

What happens to your brain when you stop using sugar

Depression and inflammation in brain

What happens to your brain on Sugar

Oreos more addictive than cocaine

Chronic consumption of sugar dampens the brain’s mechanism to tell us to stop eating:
Chronic sugar intake dampens feeding-related activity of neurons synthesizing a satiety mediator, oxytocin

Sugar reduces production of BDNF, brain-derived neurotrophic factor. It is needed to form new memories and learning. For example with people who are prediabetic or diabetic, levels of BDNF is especially low.

Low BDNF levels are associated with depression and dementia.
